Synesthesia, 2011
Materials: Sterling silver
Processes: Forging
This piece represents the ‘crossed wires’ of synesthesia. Synesthesia is the experience of two senses firing simultaneously in such a way that one sense is inseparable from another. Synesthesia is involuntary and most commonly occurs between audio-visual senses. In fact, a synesthate (person with synesthesia) may experience coloured hearing; specific colours seen upon hearing a specific letter, note or sound. I have represented this fascinating notion with intertwining wires. The wires start by encompassing the ear and spread towards the eye like the merger of sound and coloured sight. The wires signify the nerves involved in a synestheate’s reaction to sense stimulus. The lines however, take on whimsical rather than scientific form, harkening to the creative uses for synesthesia. Coloured hearing is a source of inspiration for synesthates and non-synesthates, influencing music, technological media and fine arts alike.
