Infecties, 2012
Materials: Silicone caulking, Watercolour paint, Paper, Pastercine, Vacuum Formed LDP
Processes: Sculpting, Vacuum forming, Silicone casting
Concept: INFECTIES is a product line that presents a lighthearted way to handle family hygiene. INFECTIES are site-specific visual reminders to help family members to practice good hygiene procedures. News coverage on germs, bacteria and viruses found in the home and in public spaces are common and projected in a way that achieves shock value. I am not concerned with knowing the particular statistics of what lies on every home surface, each hotel maid’s service habits, or the findings of each public restroom. However, I think it is important to have an awareness of common infections and the simple ways in which they can be prevented without paranoia or chemical cleaning attacks in the home. Furthermore, I think hygienic behaviour to prevent infection is a good way to frame the significance of a child’s household responsibilities and may help them to take initiative in their personal hygiene.
INFECTIES intends to educate families and help children become independent in the washroom as well as in their daily routines at school, in the kitchen or even the sports centre. The personified infections promote such activities as washing hands and bathing regularly, wearing clean clothes, allowing wet clothing to dry, handling food properly and other important behaviors. Included in each INFECTIES package is a specific INFECTIES character information card to learn about your chosen friend in a concise and accessible manner. The information cards are engaging for older children while the physical object when placed in context is identifiable for young children who may not be able to grasp all the ideas on the information card.
